Webhosting email - common problems

Every now and then, I get piles of duplicate e-mails. What is the problem?
A.  More than likely you are using POP3 to pick up your e-mail and your email program is not setup to 'delete messages on server after receiving them'.

To fix this, go into the settings for your e-mail account and change it to delete mail on the server.

Another option, is to switch to using IMAP to pick up your email.? This is another simple setting.

Important!? If you use POP3, and set to delete on the server, then you will not be able to read those messages by webmail because they will be deleted!

Can I use both webmail and my regular mail program?
A.  Yes you can.

To do this, we recommend that you set your email client to retrieve e-mail by IMAP instead of POP.? Webmail also uses IMAP, so this will provide better synchronization between your mail program and the webmail system.

If you do this, be sure that you delete messages you no longer need!

Using IMAP means the messages are saved on the server unless you delete them.? This is what allows you to read the message again by webmail, but if you don't delete old messages you will fill up your mailbox on the server.

When using my computer from another location, I get 'relay denied'.
A.  Most internet providers now disallow sending mail (also known as SMTP) through their network to mail servers that they do not own.

Yes, this is annoying, but you can thank the spammers for everybody having to do this.

Often, in order to be able to send mail when you are hooked to a different internet provider, you must use their server to send out e-mail no matter what the e-mail address is.

You need to find the mail server's name from the provider, and then update your SMTP server connection in your email program.

A quick tip - most internet providers have their mail servers set to the name of:
smtp.internetprovider.com
